Assets, expenses and drawings go in the debit column; capital, liabilities and incomes go in the credit column. Opening stock is a debit. The columns agree at ₹5,17,000.

Concept

A trial balance (balances method) lists every ledger balance in either the debit or the credit column. An account's normal balance depends on its type: assets, expenses, losses and drawings normally show a debit balance; capital, liabilities and incomes normally show a credit balance. A bank overdraft and a bank loan are liabilities (credit); a debtor is an asset (debit) and a creditor is a liability (credit); the opening stock (Stock on April 01, 2013) is shown as a debit.
