The trial balance only tests the arithmetical equality of debits and credits. Its agreement is not conclusive proof of accuracy, because several two-sided errors — complete omission, principle, compensating and certain commission errors — do not affect it and remain undisclosed.

Limitations

#LimitationExplanation
1Not conclusive proof of accuracyAgreement shows only that debit total = credit total, not that every entry is right
2Errors of complete omission undetectedA transaction never recorded leaves both sides unaffected
3Errors of principle undetectedCapital/revenue confusion keeps debit = credit
4Compensating errors undetectedOne error offsets another of equal amount
5Errors of commission (same-class/equal amount) undetectede.g. sale to Ram posted to Shyam, or ₹5,000 written as ₹500 on both sides
6Wrong subsidiary book undetectedRecording a purchase in the Sales Book still balances
