Case (Dipak Bharali, Sualkuchi): In Sualkuchi, a silk-weaving village in the Kamrup district of Assam, the weft-insertion (buta) stage of weaving was a slow, exhausting, hand-done step that capped how much cloth a weaver could produce. A young local weaver, Dipak Bharali, ran a modest handloom business but was unwilling to grow only by buying more and more looms. Recalling boyhood games with magnets and simple electro-magnets, he set out to build a machine to automate buta weaving. After about 80 attempts he succeeded, creating an eco-friendly device made from recyclable materials which he named 'Chaneki' — it let the machine run roughly 40 times faster than manual weft insertion. Many weavers adopted it, sharply raising their output and quality. His grassroots innovation was recognised by the National Innovation Foundation (NIF).

Why a business requires multiple objectives
- Many needs and goals to balance: A business has to balance several needs and goals at the same time, so it cannot pursue just one objective and expect excellence.
- Objectives needed in every key area: Objectives are required in every area that affects the survival and prosperity of the business — market standing, innovation, productivity, physical and financial resources, earning profits and social responsibility — and must be specific to each area.
- Profit alone is dangerous: Although profit is a leading objective, over-emphasising it to the exclusion of others is dangerous — managers may neglect customers, employees, investors and society and even exploit them, inviting opposition so the firm loses business and may earn no profit at all.
- Part of society: Business enterprises are part of society and must fulfil objectives like social responsibility to survive and prosper in the long run.
- Self-analysis: Multiple, specific objectives also let the business analyse its own performance in each area and improve.
