The mother's laugh showed affectionate nostalgia for her lost childhood — happy yet touched with the ache of the vanished past.

Some twenty or thirty years after the photograph was taken, the poet's mother would look at the snapshot and laugh at it. She would point out "Betty / And Dolly" and joke about how they had been "dressed... for the beach."
