The generation gap

The poem's central theme is the generation gap — the emotional and mental distance that grows between parents and their children as the children grow up. Father and son live together, yet think, feel and love so differently that they can no longer understand each other.

Failure of communication

Hand in hand with the gap is a breakdown of communication. 'We speak like strangers,' 'Silence surrounds us,' and when the son at last speaks, the father still cannot understand — even himself. Words no longer carry meaning between them.

Guilt, helplessness and the longing to be reconciled

The father does not simply blame the son; he searches his own conscience ('have I killed / The seed I spent?') and feels genuinely helpless. Beneath his sorrow lies a deep longing for reconciliation — he would gladly forgive and begin 'a new love,' if only the gulf could be crossed. …
