The bond between generations

At its heart the lesson is a celebration of the deep, loving friendship between a grandmother and her grandchild. Even as circumstances pull them apart, the affection never dies, and the author's tender, retrospective tone shows how precious that relationship remained to him.

Tradition versus modernity

The grandmother belongs to an older, faith-centred world of temple schools, scriptures and spinning-wheels; the boy is drawn into a modern, Western, city education of science, English and music.
