Seth's comic devices - rhyme, repetition, anticlimax, caricature and understatement - turn a tale of injustice into playful, biting satire.

The insistent rhyming couplets and lightly repeated phrases give the poem a nursery-rhyme lilt, so that its grim events arrive wrapped in a deceptively cheerful rhythm. Anticlimax punctures every build-up: solemn declarations of justice collapse into absurd technicalities, and the poem's biggest event - a King's hanging - is dispatched almost as briskly as any minor incident. Caricature flattens the King, the builder and the justices into simple comic types rather than rounded individuals, so the reader laughs at the type rather than sympathising with the person. …
