The poem offers a warning about a false peace and liberty. Its people are indeed left "in peace and liberty," but only because they are indifferent — they accept even a melon as their King rather than trouble themselves to think or object. In my view, genuine peace and liberty need much more than simply being left alone. First, they need just and responsible rulers who make careful, fair decisions instead of acting on impulse or fear of the crowd. Second, they need fair laws that apply equally to everyone, so that justice does not depend on who spoke last. Third, and most important, they need alert, thoughtful citizens who take an active interest in how they are governed, and who are willing to question wrong or absurd decisions rather than shrug them off.
