Courage and endurance in the face of death
The central theme is human courage against overwhelming odds. The family and crew endure days of freezing, exhausting labour — pumping, steering and repairing — never giving up even when the end seems certain. Their sheer endurance keeps the wrecked Wavewalker afloat long enough to reach safety.
Optimism and hope
Hope is what saves them. Larry and Herb stay 'cheerful and optimistic under the direst stress'; the narrator steers a course 'with a conviction I did not feel'; and the children remain confident their father will pull them through. This refusal to despair, more than anything, carries them to Ile Amsterdam.
The strength of family love and unity
The title itself expresses the theme: the children are unafraid of death so long as the family stays together. Mary stands at the wheel for crucial hours, Sue hides her painful injuries to spare her father worry, and the parents sit holding hands as they face what they think is the end. Love binds the family into one fighting unit.
Human courage versus the power of nature
Nature is shown at its most terrifying — 15-metre gales, a monstrous vertical wave, a boat torn to pieces. Against this raw power, the humans have only skill, planning and will. The story celebrates how human determination can withstand, though never truly conquer, the fury of the sea.
