Physical Education · Ch 5 — Physical Fitness, Wellness and Lifestyle

Introduction

Introduction

The way we live each day - what we eat, how much we move, how we handle stress, and the habits we keep - quietly decides how healthy and how happy we are over a lifetime. Modern life has made this harder: long hours of sitting, convenient fast food and constant stress have made lifestyle diseases such as obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure far more common, and in India the number of people with diabetes is now second only to China. This unit studies the three ideas that together decide the quality of a person's life - wellness, health and physical fitness - and the practical skills that protect it.

The three ideas are closely linked but not the same. Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease. Wellness is the active, ongoing process of making good choices to live as fully as possible across every side of life. Physical fitness is the body's capacity to carry out daily work with energy and without undue fatigue. Together they decide whether a person merely survives or truly thrives.

What this unit covers

Following the CBSE Class-11 textbook, the unit is built around five topics, each taught in its own section:

  • Meaning and importance of wellness, health and physical fitness - what each term means, the scholarly definitions, and the benefits of physical activity (Section 5.1).
  • Components / dimensions - the seven components of wellness, the four dimensions of health, and the two families of physical-fitness components (Section 5.2).
  • Traditional sports and regional games for promoting wellness - India's indigenous games as an accessible means of staying well (Section 5.3).
  • Leadership through physical activity and sports - how games build the qualities of a good leader (Section 5.4).
  • Introduction to first aid - PRICE - immediate first aid for a soft-tissue sports injury (Section 5.5).
Note

As you read, keep asking how each idea connects to your own daily routine. Physical Education is a practical subject - its real value lies in the choices you make about movement, food, rest and attitude every single day.
