Why BMI works as a clinical/school standard. It requires only two easily measured values — height and weight — is cheap, fast, non-invasive and needs no special equipment or training, so it can be applied to whole classes or clinic populations.
How it is used to screen:
- Each person's height and weight are recorded and BMI is computed.
- The value is placed into the WHO bands: below 18.5 Underweight, 18.5–24.9 Normal, 25.0–29.9 Overweight, 30.0+ Obese (Asian/ICMR cut-offs are lower).
- Those in the Underweight, Overweight or Obese bands are flagged for individual attention — dietary/lifestyle counselling, further body-composition assessment (WHR, skinfold), or referral to a doctor — while the Normal majority need no action. …
