Grass leaves and stems retain actively dividing intercalary meristem at their base, which survives mowing and lets the plant regenerate growth quickly from below the cut.

A plant normally grows in length through meristematic tissue located at the very tips of its shoots and roots — the apical meristems. In grasses, however, an additional kind of meristem, the intercalary meristem, is retained at the base of the leaf blades and near the nodes of the stem, sandwiched between already-differentiated permanent tissue rather than sitting at the very tip.
