The decennial growth of urban population in India peaked in 1981, the total urban population in 2001 was 285,355 thousand, and the number of towns increased by 4,344 between 1901 and 2011.

The table you have studied traces India’s urbanisation journey over more than a century, from 1901 to 2011. Each column tells a different part of the story: the number of towns, the absolute urban population, its share of the total population, and the decennial growth rate — the percentage by which the urban population grew in each ten-year period. Let us take the three questions one by one.

(19.1) In which year was the decennial growth of urban population the highest in India?

Look down the last column, “Decennial Growth (%).” The figures rise and fall, but the highest single value is 46.14, recorded in the year 1981. That means between 1971 and 1981, India’s urban population grew by over 46 per cent — the fastest pace in the entire 110-year span shown. This was a period of accelerated rural-to-urban migration, driven by industrial expansion and the growth of cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai.

Important

The decennial growth rate is not the same as the urban population’s share of the total. Even though the growth rate was highest in 1981, the urban share of total population (23.34%) was still modest compared to later decades.

(19.2) How much was the total urban population in the year 2001?

The table gives the urban population in thousands. For 2001, the entry under “Urban Population (in Thousands)” is 2,85,355. That is 285,355 thousand people, or in plain numbers, 285,355,000 — over 285 million people living in urban areas by the turn of the century.

(19.3) How much was the total growth of number of towns between the years 1901 to 2011 in India? …
