A hinterland is the inland region lying behind a port or coastal settlement, which supplies goods to that port and depends on it for trade and economic exchange with the wider world.

The term "hinterland" comes from German, where hinter means "behind" and land means "land" — quite literally, the land that lies behind. In geography and economic history, it describes the relationship between a port city and the interior territory it serves.

Think of a port as a gateway. Ships arrive carrying goods from distant lands, and they need cargo to take back.
