Salinisation of soils is the primary form of land degradation in irrigated areas, caused by the accumulation of salts when irrigation water evaporates or when waterlogging brings subsurface salts to the surface.

Irrigation transforms agriculture by bringing water to arid and semi-arid regions, but it carries a hidden cost. When water is applied to fields—especially in areas with poor drainage or high evaporation rates—it doesn't simply disappear. The water evaporates, but the dissolved salts it carries remain behind, accumulating in the upper layers of soil. Over time, this process turns productive land into a white-crusted, barren expanse where crops struggle to survive.

The mechanism is straightforward yet insidious. Irrigation water, even when relatively pure, contains trace amounts of dissolved salts. In hot, dry climates where evaporation exceeds rainfall, these salts concentrate at the surface. Additionally, excessive irrigation can raise the water table, bringing saline groundwater closer to the root zone. As this water moves upward through capillary action and evaporates, it deposits its salt load in the soil. The result is a toxic environment for most crops—high salt concentrations interfere with water uptake, damage root systems, and ultimately render the land unfit for cultivation.

Important

Salinisation is particularly severe in canal-irrigated regions of Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh, where decades of intensive irrigation without adequate drainage have left vast tracts affected. The problem is compounded in areas with naturally saline groundwater or impermeable subsoil layers that prevent salt leaching. …
