Copper

13.5.2

Copper

Copper is one of the most essential metals in modern industry, and its importance comes from a unique combination of properties. It is an indispensable raw material for the electrical industry — without copper, making wires, electric motors, transformers, and generators would be nearly impossible. The reason lies in its excellent conductivity and workability.

Copper is alloyable, meaning it can be mixed with other metals to create stronger or more useful materials. For instance, it is mixed with gold to give strength to jewellery. It is also malleable (can be hammered into thin sheets) and ductile (can be drawn into fine wires). These physical properties make it ideal for shaping into electrical components.

Important

Copper is the backbone of the electrical industry — used in wires, motors, transformers, and generators. It is also alloyed with gold to strengthen jewellery.

Major Copper-producing Regions in India

The textbook identifies three main states where copper deposits occur in significant quantities:

  • Jharkhand — Singhbhum district
  • Madhya Pradesh — Balaghat district
  • Rajasthan — Jhunjhunu and Alwar districts

These are the principal producers of copper in the country.

Minor Producers of Copper

Apart from the major belts, copper is also mined on a smaller scale in the following locations:
