Part (a): Name the pattern from the printed diagram (linear/rectangular/circular, etc.) and give two of its characteristics.

Part (b): Same diagram task; the Visually-Impaired alternative asks for three characteristics of compact or dispersed settlements.

Rural settlement patterns describe how dwellings are arranged over the land, shaped by terrain, water, roads and social factors. The recognised patterns include linear, rectangular, circular/semi-circular, star-like, T-shaped, cross-shaped, double and dispersed.

Part (a)

Because the answer depends on a figure printed in the paper, the pattern itself must be read from that diagram; the required steps are:

  • (9.1) Identify and name the pattern. Look at how the houses are placed relative to roads, rivers and fields. Houses in a single row along a road, river, canal or valley edge = linear; houses arranged in a grid of streets meeting at right angles = rectangular; houses around a lake, tank or central open space = circular; and so on.
  • (9.2) Two characteristics of that pattern. For example, if the diagram shows a linear pattern: (i) the settlement is elongated and narrow, following the controlling line (road/river), so its length far exceeds its width; and (ii) each household has direct frontage on that line for easy access to transport or water, with cultivated fields lying behind the houses. If it shows a rectangular pattern: (i) streets cross at right angles to form regular blocks, and (ii) there is usually a central crossing that becomes the market or focal point.

State plainly that the precise identification requires the physical diagram, which cannot be seen here; only the general method and the features of each pattern can be described.

Part (b)

Alternative (b) is the same diagram-based question. Its printed note provides, for Visually Impaired candidates only, a non-diagram substitute: describe three characteristics of compact or dispersed settlements. …
