You must name five world features — nomadic herding area, industrial region, international airport, mega city, and a Trans-Continental Railway terminal — using the given clues. The visually impaired alternative asks for one example each from specific continents/countries.
The Concept
Map-based questions test your ability to locate and recall specific geographical features from the syllabus. Each feature belongs to a distinct category — economic activity (nomadic herding), industrial geography, transport infrastructure, and urban geography. The key is to match the region or country hinted in the clue with the correct example from your textbook.
For the visually impaired alternative, the same knowledge is tested in a direct, text-based format — you just need to recall one correct example for each category.
Step-by-Step Solution
1. A — An area of nomadic herding
Nomadic herding is practised in dry, cold, or mountainous regions where settled agriculture is difficult. In Africa, the Sahara Desert and its fringes (Sahel) are home to nomadic herders like the Tuareg and Fulani. The most commonly cited area in the syllabus is the Sahara Desert itself, or more specifically the Sahel region (the semi-arid belt south of the Sahara). For the map, any of these is acceptable.
In the CBSE map, the area marked is usually the Sahara Desert or the Sahel. Both are correct. For the visually impaired alternative, simply write "Sahara Desert" or "Sahel region".
2. B — An industrial region
Europe has several major industrial regions: the Ruhr region (Germany), the Midlands (UK), the Po Valley (Italy), and the Silesian region (Poland/Czechia). The Ruhr is the most prominent and is almost always the one marked on the map. It is located in western Germany, centred around the Ruhr River.
Do not confuse "industrial region" with a single city. The Ruhr is a region, not a city like Berlin or Paris.
3. C — An international airport
The United States has many international airports. The most famous and busiest is John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York City. Others include Los Angeles (LAX), Chicago O'Hare (ORD), and Atlanta (ATL). JFK is the most likely answer for a map question.
If the map shows a location near New York City, it is JFK. If it shows a location near Washington D.C., it could be Dulles (IAD). But JFK is the safest bet.
4. D — A mega city
A mega city has a population of over 10 million. Brazil has two: São Paulo (the largest, ~22 million) and Rio de Janeiro (~13 million). São Paulo is the most commonly cited mega city in Brazil and is almost certainly the one marked on the map (southeastern Brazil).
São Paulo is also Brazil's industrial and financial hub. It is the most important mega city in the country.
5. E — The terminal station of ‘Trans-Continental Railway’ …
