Part (a): International trade developed from barter and the Silk Road through colonial and industrial specialisation to modern containerised, liberalised, blocaligned global trade.

Part (b): Population is a basis of trade because size, density, age structure and income decide market size, labour supply and demand patterns.

Part (a)

The development of international trade is really the story of growing specialisation and exchange between regions that differ from one another. In earliest times trade was local and took the form of barter — direct exchange of goods without money. As surpluses and demand grew, exchange stretched over long distances along routes such as the Silk Road, which carried silk, spices and precious stones between China and the Mediterranean and also spread ideas and religions.

The Age of Exploration (15th–16th centuries) opened ocean routes; European powers linked continents, and colonialism established a pattern in which colonies supplied raw materials and imperial powers sold back manufactures. After 1945, the GATT (1947, later the WTO) cut tariffs, and containerisation slashed shipping costs, so goods now move cheaply through global supply chains. Trade blocs such as the EU, ASEAN and USMCA deepen this integration. Concrete examples of trade based on difference are Saudi Arabia exporting crude oil, Japan exporting cars and electronics, and India exporting tropical tea, spices and IT services to temperate Europe. …
