This is a map-marking question (with an alternative for visually impaired candidates) testing knowledge of India's human development, demography, agriculture, minerals, industries, and transport infrastructure. The answers identify Kerala, Bihar/West Bengal, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Bhatinda, Davangere/Hubli, Visakhapatnam, and Silchar respectively.

This question tests your grasp of India's regional geography across multiple dimensions: social indicators, population patterns, agricultural zones, mineral belts, industrial centres, and transport networks. For map work you would locate and mark five features with appropriate symbols; for the written alternative you name them directly. The underlying skill is the same — knowing where key economic and social phenomena are concentrated in India.

Let me work through each sub-question with the reasoning that leads to the answer.

22.1 State with the highest rank in the Human Development Index

The Human Development Index (HDI) combines life expectancy, education, and per capita income. Among Indian states, Kerala consistently ranks first. Its achievements in literacy (near-universal), healthcare (low infant mortality, high life expectancy), and relatively equitable income distribution set it apart. The state's social reforms, public health infrastructure, and emphasis on education since the mid-20th century explain this lead.

Answer: Kerala

22.2 State with the highest population density (2011)

Population density is persons per square kilometre. The 2011 Census recorded Bihar with a density of about 1,102 persons/km², the highest among all states. (The National Capital Territory of Delhi, a Union Territory, has far higher density at over 11,000/km², but among states Bihar leads.) Bihar's fertile Gangetic plains support intensive agriculture and dense rural settlement, while limited out-migration until recently kept population concentrated.

Note

Some sources cite West Bengal (density ~1,029/km²) as a close second. If your syllabus or reference material lists West Bengal, that reflects a marginal difference in classification. For CBSE Geography, Bihar is the standard answer for the state with highest density in 2011.

Answer: Bihar

22.3 Leading groundnut producer State

Groundnut (peanut) cultivation in India is concentrated in semi-arid regions with well-drained sandy loam. Gujarat is the leading producer, accounting for roughly 35–40 % of national output. The Saurashtra region, with its suitable soil and climate, is the heartland of groundnut farming. Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu also produce significant quantities, but Gujarat's dominance is clear.

Answer: Gujarat

22.4 Bailadila iron ore mines

Bailadila, meaning "the hump of the ox" (referring to the hill's shape), is a rich iron-ore deposit in the Chhattisgarh state, in the Bastar district. The ore is high-grade hematite, and the mines supply raw material to the Bhilai Steel Plant and are also exported via Visakhapatnam port. The location is in the southern part of Chhattisgarh, near the Odisha border.

Answer: Chhattisgarh (Bastar district)

22.5 An oil refinery in Punjab

Punjab has one major oil refinery: the Bhatinda (Bathinda) refinery, operated by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL). Commissioned in the mid-2000s, it processes crude oil brought by pipeline and supplies petroleum products to Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir.

Answer: Bhatinda (Bathinda)
