Part (b): A cottage industry is the smallest manufacturing unit — home-based, family-run, using simple tools and little capital.
Part (a)
Modern manufacturing is very unevenly spread; a few regions dominate world production. The reason is cumulative advantage or agglomeration economies. The first industrial regions had a combination of raw materials, energy, transport and markets, and once factories concentrated there they drew in workers, housing, skilled labour, supplier firms and infrastructure, which made those places even more attractive for new industry — a self-reinforcing cycle.
Classic examples: the Ruhr Valley in Germany grew on rich coal deposits and nearby iron ore into Europe's steel and chemical heartland and remains a manufacturing zone because of its established infrastructure and skilled workforce. The Great Lakes region of the USA and Canada combined iron ore from Minnesota, coal from Appalachia and cheap water transport on the lakes to make Pittsburgh, Detroit and Chicago into steel and automobile giants — Detroit became the car capital because steel and metalworkers were already there. The Kanto Plain (Keihin Industrial Zone) around Tokyo, Yokohama and Kawasaki concentrated Japanese manufacturing because it had a large labour pool, a major port for imported raw materials and the country's biggest consumer market, minimising transport costs. Each shows that manufacturing clusters where resources, access, markets and a prior industrial base coincide. …
