Linguistic Classification
The speakers of India’s major languages do not belong to a single family. Instead, they are spread across four distinct language families, each with its own sub-families, branches, or groups. This classification is based on linguistic ancestry — languages that share a common origin are grouped together, even if they are now spoken in different parts of the country.
The four language families are:
- Indo-European (specifically the Indo-Aryan branch) — the largest family, covering most of northern, western, and central India. Languages like Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, and Urdu belong here.
- Dravidian — concentrated in southern India. Major languages include Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.
- Austro-Asiatic — spoken mainly by tribal communities in central and eastern India. Examples include Santali, Mundari, and Ho.
- Sino-Tibetan — found in the northeastern states and along the Himalayan belt. Languages like Manipuri, Bodo, and various Naga and Mizo dialects fall under this family. …
