Industries Based on Ownership
Industries are classified by ownership to show who controls them and for whose benefit they operate. The textbook gives three clear categories.
Public sector industries are owned and managed by governments. In India, these are called Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). Socialist countries, where the state controls the economy, have many state-owned industries. Mixed economies — like India — have both public and private sector enterprises working side by side.
Private sector industries are owned by individual investors or groups of investors. They are managed by private organisations, not by the government. In capitalist countries, most industries are privately owned.
Joint sector industries are managed by joint stock companies. Sometimes the private and public sectors come together to establish and manage an industry. The textbook asks you to make a list of such industries — examples include Maruti Suzuki (originally a joint venture between the Indian government and Suzuki of Japan) and Oil India Limited (a joint venture between the government and private partners). …
