The Dandi March, also known as the Salt Satyagraha, began on 12 March 1930. Gandhi, along with 78 carefully chosen followers, set out from the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad. The march was not merely a physical journey — it was a deliberate, symbolic act of defiance against the British monopoly on salt, a commodity used by every Indian, rich or poor.
The route Gandhi chose passed through the heart of Gujarat, touching villages and towns where he stopped each day to address crowds, hold prayers, and explain the meaning of civil disobedience. The march covered about 390 kilometres over 24 days, ending on 5 April 1930 at Dandi, a small coastal village in the Surat district.
The NCERT textbook does not list every single village on the route, but it mentions key places that the march passed through. The following account is based on what the textbook records.
