Several regional parties in India have successfully formed state governments, reflecting the country's diverse political landscape.

India’s federal structure allows regional parties—those rooted in a specific state or region—to wield significant power. Unlike national parties with a pan-India presence, regional parties often focus on local issues, language, culture, or economic interests. Over the decades, many such parties have not only influenced coalition politics at the Centre but have also formed their own governments in various states. Here are four prominent examples.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is a classic example of a regional party that has governed a state for extended periods. Founded in 1949 in Tamil Nadu, the DMK rose on a platform of Dravidian identity, social justice, and opposition to Hindi imposition. It first came to power in 1967 under C. N. Annadurai and has since alternated with its rival, the AIADMK, forming multiple governments in the state. Its rule has shaped Tamil Nadu’s politics and policies for decades.

Ramachandran, the AIADMK won the Tamil Nadu assembly elections in 1977 and governed the state for many years. It has continued to be a dominant player in the state, with leaders like J. Jayalalithaa leading it to power multiple times. The AIADMK’s tenure has been marked by populist welfare schemes and strong regional identity.

It emerged from the legacy of Biju Patnaik, a former chief minister, and has focused on development, disaster management, and social welfare. The BJD’s sustained electoral success shows how a regional party can dominate a state for over two decades without aligning permanently with any national alliance. …
