India-Israel relations have evolved from cautious distance to a multi-dimensional strategic partnership, driven by shared security concerns, economic cooperation, and diplomatic realignment.

India and Israel established full diplomatic relations only in 1992, a surprisingly late date given that India had recognised Israel as early as 1950. For four decades, New Delhi kept Israel at arm's length, largely to avoid alienating Arab nations and the large Muslim vote bank at home. The end of the Cold War, the decline of the Non-Aligned Movement's relevance, and India's own shifting foreign policy priorities changed that calculus. Today, the relationship is one of the most dynamic in India's external engagements, spanning defence, agriculture, technology, and diplomacy.

Defence and security cooperation forms the bedrock of the partnership. Israel has emerged as one of India's top three arms suppliers, providing critical systems such as Phalcon airborne early-warning radar, Barak anti-missile defence systems, and a wide range of drones and precision-guided munitions. This is not a simple buyer-seller relationship; it involves joint development, technology transfers, and co-production. The two countries also share deep concerns about terrorism, and their intelligence agencies cooperate closely, especially after the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which had Israeli targets. This security dimension is the most visible and consequential pillar of the relationship.

Agricultural and water technology cooperation is the second major feature, and one that directly touches the lives of ordinary Indians. Israel, a country with a desert climate, has world-leading expertise in drip irrigation, water recycling, and arid-zone farming. India has set up dozens of 'Centres of Excellence' across states like Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, where Israeli experts train Indian farmers in techniques that dramatically increase crop yields while using far less water.
