The four Indian states marked on the map are identified by linking each clue — a political leader’s home state, a region of Naxalite activity, and the Congress party’s electoral wipeout in 1977 — to the correct state on the outline map.

Let us take each clue in turn and connect it to the state it points to. These are not random facts; each one is a piece of political geography that tells you something about India’s post-independence history.

  1. The State related to former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh. Chaudhary Charan Singh was a farmer’s leader and a key figure in north Indian politics. He served as Prime Minister briefly in 1979–80, but his political base was always in western Uttar Pradesh. He represented the interests of the Jat community and the peasantry, and his home state — the one he was born in, represented in Parliament, and served as Chief Minister of — is Uttar Pradesh. So the state marked as A on the map is Uttar Pradesh.
  2. The State to which former Deputy Prime Minister Jagjivan Ram belonged. Jagjivan Ram was a Dalit leader and a towering figure in the Congress party. He served as Deputy Prime Minister under Morarji Desai after the 1977 election. His entire political career was rooted in Bihar — he was born in the Bhojpur district of Bihar, represented the Sasaram constituency in the Lok Sabha for decades, and was a minister in several central governments. So the state marked as B is Bihar.
  3. The State where the Naxalites were very active. The Naxalite movement began in 1967 in the village of Naxalbari in West Bengal. From there it spread to other parts of the country, but the original and most intense area of activity in the late 1960s and 1970s was West Bengal. The movement was led by radical communists who broke away from the CPI(M) and launched armed peasant uprisings. So the state marked as C is West Bengal.
    Note

The Naxalite movement later spread to parts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand, but in the 1970s the most active region was West Bengal.

  4. A State where the Congress party could not win even a single seat in the Lok Sabha elections in 1977. …
