The 1970 general elections in Pakistan were a watershed moment in the country’s history. They were the first direct elections held on the basis of universal adult franchise since Pakistan’s creation in 1947. The elections were meant to decide the composition of the National Assembly, which would then frame a new constitution for the country.
East Pakistan, the geographically separate and more populous eastern wing of Pakistan, had long felt politically and economically marginalised by the western wing. The Awami League, under the charismatic leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, had emerged as the dominant political force in East Pakistan. Its platform was built on the famous Six Point Programme, which demanded greater autonomy for East Pakistan, including control over its own foreign exchange, trade, and defence — essentially a federal structure with maximum provincial power.
When the elections were held in December 1970, the result was a landslide of historic proportions. The Awami League won 160 out of 162 seats allocated to East Pakistan in the 300-seat National Assembly. This meant it had secured an absolute majority in the entire house, as East Pakistan held a majority of the total seats. No other party in East Pakistan — not the Pakistan Peoples Party, nor the Muslim League factions — could win more than a handful of seats.
The two seats the Awami League did not win were both in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, a region with a distinct tribal population that had its own local political dynamics. …
