Globalisation is the growing interconnectedness and integration of economies, cultures and societies across the world. It is a process, not a single event, and two factors above all have driven it.

The first cause is the revolution in technology, especially transport and communication. From the telegraph and telephone to the microchip, the internet and satellite communication, and from cheaper air travel to container shipping, technology has slashed the cost and time of moving goods, money, people, ideas and information. A firm in one country can now coordinate production and sales across continents in real time. By effectively removing the barrier of distance, technology is the engine that makes global supply chains and worldwide flows possible. …
