The Soviet Union, officially the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), was established on a distinct ideological bedrock. Its political system was based on socialist ideology, specifically a variant known as Marxism-Leninism. This ideology advocated for a classless society, collective ownership of the means of production, and a planned economy, with the state playing a central role in all aspects of economic and social life. The ultimate goal was to transition towards communism, a stateless and classless society.

Note

While the term 'communist' is often used interchangeably, 'socialist' more accurately describes the system the USSR implemented, as it was seen as a transitional stage towards the theoretical communist ideal.

During the Cold War, the world was largely divided into two blocs, each led by a superpower and its respective military alliance. In response to the formation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) by Western powers, the USSR established its own collective defence treaty. Warsaw Pact was the military alliance started by the USSR in 1955. This alliance, formally known as the Warsaw Treaty Organization, comprised the Soviet Union and several Eastern European satellite states, serving as a counterweight to NATO and solidifying Soviet control over its sphere of influence.

Within the Soviet Union itself, political power was highly centralised and monopolised by a single entity. The Communist Party dominated the Soviet Union’s political system. This party, officially the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), was the sole legal political party, controlling all levels of government, the economy, and public life.
