Yes, I am a member of groups such as my family, class and circle of friends; the NCERT reasons that motivated me to join are security, status, self-esteem, satisfaction of psychological/social needs, goal achievement and gaining knowledge — with proximity and similarity bringing us together.

This is a reflective question, but the answer must be grounded in NCERT's account of 'Why Do People Join Groups?' All of us are members of our family, class and groups with which we interact or play. Different groups satisfy different needs, so we are simultaneously members of different groups. In general, people join groups for the following reasons — I can map my own membership (say, my class and friendship group) onto each:

  • Security: When we are alone, we feel insecure. Groups reduce this insecurity — being with people gives a sense of comfort and protection, so we feel stronger and less vulnerable to threats. My friendship group gives me exactly this feeling of support.
  • Status: When we are members of a group that is perceived to be important by others, we feel recognised and experience a sense of power. (For instance, when the school team wins an inter-institutional competition, members feel proud.)
  • Self-esteem: Groups provide feelings of self-worth and establish a positive social identity. Being a member of prestigious groups enhances one's self-concept.
  • Satisfaction of psychological and social needs: Groups satisfy needs such as a sense of belongingness, giving and receiving attention, love, and power.
  • Goal achievement: Groups help in achieving goals that cannot be attained individually — there is power in the majority.
  • Provide knowledge and information: Group membership provides knowledge and information and thus broadens our view; as individuals we may not have all the required information, and groups supplement it.

What brought us together (Group Formation)

Basic to group formation is some contact and interaction, facilitated by:

  • Proximity: Repeated interactions with the same set of individuals — living in the same colony, going to the same school, playing in the same playground — give a chance to know them, their interests and attitudes.
  • Similarity: Being exposed to someone over time makes us assess our similarities. We like people who are similar because we prefer consistency; similar people reinforce and validate our opinions and values, so we start liking them.
  • Common motives and goals: When people have common motives or goals, they get together and form a group that helps them attain those goals.

Applying it to my group: I joined my friendship group mainly because of proximity (we study in the same class/live nearby) and similarity (shared interests, such as a sport or hobby). Staying in it satisfies my need for security and belongingness, boosts my self-esteem, and lets us achieve together — for example planning a project — what none of us could do alone.

✓Final answer

Yes, I am a member of a certain group (my class/friendship group). I was motivated to join and stay by the reasons NCERT gives for joining groups: security (comfort and protection), status and self-esteem (recognition and a positive social identity), satisfaction of psychological and social needs (belongingness, attention, love), goal achievement (accomplishing what I cannot alone), and gaining knowledge and information. Proximity (being in the same place) and similarity (shared interests and attitudes) were the conditions that first brought us together.
