  • Nature of performance. In a team, both individual contribution and collective teamwork matter; members' efforts are interdependent and complementary, so the outcome depends on how well they coordinate (as in basketball, where players must combine). In an ordinary group, performance depends mainly on the contribution of the individual members added together, with less required interdependence.
  • Accountability. In a team, even if there is a captain or leader, the members hold themselves mutually responsible for the result. In a group, the leader or whoever heads it holds the responsibility for the work done.
