Redemption of debentures results in an outflow of cash in the Cash Flow Statement, as it involves repayment of borrowed funds.

Concept and Accounting Treatment

Debentures are long-term borrowings for a company. When a company issues debentures, it receives cash (inflow). When it redeems (repays) them, it pays cash to debenture holders (outflow). The key principle is that any repayment of a liability reduces cash.

In the Cash Flow Statement (AS 3 / Ind AS 7), cash flows are classified into three activities:

  • Operating activities – main revenue-producing activities
  • Investing activities – purchase/sale of long-term assets
  • Financing activities – changes in equity and borrowings

Redemption of debentures is a financing activity because debentures are a form of borrowing. The repayment reduces the company's borrowings and therefore represents a cash outflow.

Why It Is an Outflow

When debentures are redeemed:

  • The company pays cash to debenture holders (either at maturity or on earlier redemption).
  • This payment reduces the company's cash balance.
  • There is no corresponding cash inflow from this transaction.
Watch out

Common Mistake

Some students confuse redemption with issue. Issue of debentures brings in cash (inflow), but redemption pays out cash (outflow). They are opposite transactions.

Treatment in Cash Flow Statement

In the Cash Flow Statement, redemption of debentures is shown under Financing Activities as a negative figure (outflow). For example:
