A takes 900/4.5=200900/4.5=200 s; B (with a 150 m start) runs only 750 m and finishes 50 s later in 250 s, so B's speed is 3 m/s.

Time=DistanceSpeed\text{Time}=\dfrac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Speed}}. A start of ss metres means B's distance == race length − s-\,s. "Defeated by tt seconds" ⇒\Rightarrow B's time == A's time + t+\,t.

  1. A runs the full 900 m at 4.5 m/s: A's time =9004.5=200=\dfrac{900}{4.5}=200 s.
  2. B is given a 150 m start, so B has to run 900−150=750900-150=750 m.
  3. A defeats B by 50 s, so B's time =200+50=250=200+50=250 s. …
