Meaning of Controlling: Controlling is the management function of ensuring that actual organisational activities conform to planned activities — it measures deviations from planned performance and initiates corrective action to guarantee that organisational goals are actually achieved.

Steps in the process of controlling:

  1. Setting performance standards: deciding, in specific and where possible quantitative terms, the criteria against which actual performance will later be judged.
  2. Measurement of actual performance: objectively measuring what actually happened, ideally in the same units as the standards, so a fair comparison can be made.
