Part (a) Steps in the Process of Selection

Selection is the process of choosing the most suitable person from among the applicants. It works like a series of hurdles, eliminating unsuitable candidates at each stage.

  1. Preliminary Screening. After applications are received, the HR department conducts an initial review of application forms and resumes to eliminate candidates who do not meet the basic eligibility criteria in terms of qualifications, experience or skills. This weeds out obviously unsuitable applicants early and saves time and cost.
  2. Selection Tests. Candidates who clear screening are given tests that objectively measure the qualities needed for the job. Common types include aptitude tests (potential to learn), intelligence tests (mental ability and reasoning), personality tests (traits and temperament), trade or proficiency tests (existing job skills) and interest tests (the kind of work a person prefers). The mix of tests depends on the nature of the job.
  3. Employment Interview. This is a formal, in-depth conversation between the candidate and the interviewer(s) to assess suitability. It is a two-way process: the organisation evaluates the candidate's knowledge, skills, confidence and attitude, while the candidate learns more about the job and the company.
