If an observer had narrated the incident, we would only learn what could be seen from outside — a skinny boy thrown into the pool, sinking, thrashing and being pulled out — not the private storm of thoughts and sensations. Sample third-person paragraph:
The boy sat quietly by the pool until the older lad seized him and flung him into the deep end. He sank at once, then struggled up, arms clutching at nothing, his face breaking the surface for an instant before he went under again. Twice more he rose and sank, until at last he stopped moving and drifted, limp, towards the bottom, where the others finally reached him and dragged him out, choking and half-conscious. …
