Douglas tested his fear in three stages -- swimming the pool length alone, then two miles across Lake Wentworth in New Hampshire, and finally across Warm Lake in the Cascades and back.

When the instructor finished, telling Douglas in April, "Now you can swim," Douglas was still not finished. He wondered whether he would be terror-stricken when he was alone in the pool, so he began to test himself deliberately.

His first test was in the pool itself. He swam its length, up and down, alone. Tiny vestiges of the old terror would return, but now he could frown at it and say, "Trying to scare me, eh? Well, here's to you! Look!" -- and swim on. This went on until July, yet he was still not sure all the terror had left.

So he moved to open water. He went to Lake Wentworth in New Hampshire, dived off a dock at Triggs Island, and swam two miles across the lake to Stamp Act Island, using the crawl, breast stroke, side stroke and back stroke. Only once did the terror return: in the middle of the lake he put his face under and saw nothing but bottomless water, and the old sensation came back in miniature. He laughed and said, "Well, Mr Terror, what do you think you can do to me?" It fled, and he swam on. …
