Character Analysis
When you finish a good story, you often remember a person more than the plot — the way they spoke, what they feared, the choice they made when it mattered most. Character analysis is the skill of studying that person closely: working out who they are, what drives them, and how the writer makes us understand them.
What "character" means in literature
A character is any person (or person-like figure) in a story, play, or poem. They do not all carry the same weight:
- Protagonist — the central figure whose journey the story follows (for example, Derry in On the Face of It).
- Antagonist — the person or force that opposes the protagonist. This need not be a villain; it can be a fear, a society, or a circumstance.
- Foil — a character placed beside another to sharpen the contrast between them. Mr Lamb, calm and open, is a foil to the bitter, withdrawn Derry; the difference makes each one clearer.
- Round vs flat — a round character is complex and many-sided; a flat character has just one or two fixed traits.
- Static vs dynamic — a static character stays essentially the same, while a dynamic character changes over the course of the work.
How writers reveal character
Writers show us who a person is in two broad ways:
- Direct characterization — the text states it plainly ("he was a cheerful old man").
- Indirect characterization — the text lets us infer it, through what the character says, does, and thinks, how they look, and how others react to them. Most strong writing relies on this: we decide Mr Lamb is warm because he keeps his gate open and talks kindly to a frightened stranger, not because we are told to think so.
Traits, motivation and arc
A good analysis moves past description to explanation:
- Traits — the stable qualities a character shows (courage, bitterness, generosity).
- Motivation — why they act as they do. Derry's defensiveness grows from years of stares and cruel remarks, not from a cruel nature.
- Conflict — the pressure they face, whether outer (other people, a situation) or inner (self-doubt, fear). …
Sophie's father is a hard-headed, weary working man who has clearly heard her tall tales before and has no patience for another. …
Sophie's father flatly disbelieves her and treats the story with contempt.
Far from being impressed, Sophie's father greets the news with scorn. When Geoff says Sophie met Danny Casey, the father merely turns his head “on his thick neck” with “an expression of disdain” and, instead of answering, remarks distantly to the television that he once “knew a man who had known Tom Finney.” …

›Reveal solutionSolution
Derry's dialogue is overwhelmingly dominated by vulnerability, stemming from his physical disfigurement and the resulting emotional pain and isolation.
Derry, a young boy with a face disfigured by acid, carries a heavy burden of self-consciousness and emotional pain. His interactions, particularly in the initial stages of the play, are deeply colored by his experiences of being stared at, pitied, or feared by others. This constant exposure to judgment and the resulting isolation have made him incredibly sensitive and guarded, yet simultaneously open to hurt.
His dialogue frequently reveals a profound sense of insecurity and a desperate need to protect himself from further emotional wounds. He anticipates negative reactions from people and often withdraws, believing he is an object of repulsion. When he speaks, it is often with a defensive edge, a readiness to lash out, or a quiet despair about his condition. He internalizes the perceived pity and fear of others, which manifests as self-pity and a feeling of being an outcast.
NoteDerry's vulnerability is not just about being physically exposed; it's primarily about his emotional state. He is easily wounded by words, glances, and even imagined judgments, because his self-worth has been severely eroded.
Consider his statements about people staring or calling him names, or his reluctance to engage with Mr. Lamb initially. These are not expressions of superiority, as he clearly feels inferior and ostracized. Nor do they show shrewdness; he is not cunning or manipulative in his speech, but rather raw and honest about his pain. He is also far from indifferent; his strong emotional reactions to his situation and to others' perceptions demonstrate a deep engagement with his suffering, not a detachment from it. …
- CBSE 2026Set 1/1/11 markMCQQ.Complete the following suitably: When Mr. Lamb reassures Derry that his injury is not the whole of him, he means _________. (A) Your face will get healed and your ideas about your appearance will change. (B) You are not just your face or your injury. That is not the sum total of who you are. (C) I am afraid of your face and your appearance. (D) You shouldn't look into the mirror so that you don't get the feeling of dejection. (On the Face of It)
›Reveal solutionSolution
Mr. Lamb tells Derry that his burnt face is only one part of him, not the whole of who he is — a lesson about seeing beyond physical appearance. The correct completion is option (B).
In Susan Hill's play On the Face of It, Mr. Lamb is a quiet, wise counterpoint to Derry's bitter self-loathing. Derry, a teenager whose face has been disfigured by acid, has absorbed the stares and whispers of others so deeply that he believes his scarred appearance is his identity. Mr. Lamb, an old man with a tin leg, challenges this narrow view.
When Mr. Lamb reassures Derry that his injury is not the whole of him, he is not offering cheap comfort or pretending the injury does not matter. He is stating a simple truth: a person is made up of many things — thoughts, feelings, actions, relationships, dreams. A single physical flaw, however visible, cannot define an entire human being. Mr. Lamb himself lives with a disability, yet he fills his life with gardening, reading and open-hearted talk; he does not let his tin leg become his whole story, and he wants Derry to see himself the same way. …
- CBSE 2026Set 1/2/11 markMCQQ.Why does the sound of the city being 'muffled and distant' matter in the context of her present mood? (A) reflects her desire to escape the noise of daily life. (B) suggests a peaceful contrast to her inner excitement. (C) creates a dreamy atmosphere that supports her fantasy. (D) emphasizes her emotional detachment from the real world. (Going Places)
›Reveal solutionSolution
The muffled, distant sound of the city in Going Places directly mirrors Sophie’s emotional detachment from her real-world surroundings, as she is mentally absorbed in her fantasy about meeting Danny Casey.
The question asks why the muffled and distant city sound matters in the context of Sophie’s present mood. To answer this, we must first understand where Sophie is and what she is feeling at that moment. She has just left her home after a tense conversation with her father, who dismissed her dreams of opening a boutique and becoming a fashion designer. Now she is walking alone through the streets of Dublin, but her mind is not on the city around her.
The key to the answer lies in the word “present mood.” Sophie is not simply tired of noise or seeking peace. She is in a state of intense, self-absorbed fantasy. She is replaying her imagined encounter with the footballer Danny Casey, constructing every detail in her mind. The real world — the traffic, the people, the ordinary sounds of the city — has become irrelevant to her. The author describes the city’s sound as “muffled and distant” precisely because Sophie’s consciousness has withdrawn from it. She is not hearing the city clearly because she is not truly present in it.
NoteThe phrase “muffled and distant” is a sensory detail that reveals Sophie’s psychological state. It is not a description of the actual volume of traffic, but of how her mind filters out reality.
Now let us examine each option carefully.
Option (A) — “reflects her desire to escape the noise of daily life” — is too literal and shallow. Sophie is not trying to escape noise; she is escaping into a dream. The noise is not the problem; the entire real world is what she wishes to leave behind. The muffled sound is a symptom of her detachment, not a goal she is pursuing.
Option (B) — “suggests a peaceful contrast to her inner excitement” — is misleading. Sophie’s inner state is not peaceful. She is excited, nervous, and full of longing. The muffled sound does not create a contrast; it confirms that her excitement has pushed the real world away. There is no peace here — only the tension of a fantasy that she knows, deep down, is unlikely to come true. …
- CBSE 2026Set 1/2/11 markMCQQ.How does the description of the setting contribute to the mood of the extract? (A) creates a nostalgic and emotionally reflective tone through memories. (B) builds suspense and tension with dark, unfamiliar surroundings. (C) highlights a lively and energetic atmosphere with city sounds. (D) emphasizes a sense of urgency and action in Sophie's movements. (Going Places)
›Reveal solutionSolution
The muted, dreamlike setting mirrors Sophie's inward, longing state of mind, giving the extract a nostalgic and emotionally reflective mood — option (A).
Sophie, the central figure of 'Going Places', copes with the dullness of her working-class life by escaping into elaborate fantasies — of owning a boutique, of being noticed, above all of a romance with the young football star Danny Casey. Her real surroundings barely hold her attention; her mind is always somewhere else, in a brighter, imagined world.
The description of the setting is shaped to reflect exactly this. Sounds and sights are rendered soft and distant, as though seen through the haze of a daydream. This muted quality does not build excitement or danger; it draws us into Sophie's private, wistful interior, where longing and imagination matter more than the world around her. The result is a quiet, reflective atmosphere tinged with yearning. …

›Reveal solutionSolution
Hana's relief springs from the safe departure of the wounded American soldier — it ends the unbearable strain of hiding an enemy in wartime Japan and restores her family's security.
In Pearl S. Buck's "The Enemy," Hana is the wife of Dr. Sadao Hoki, a Japanese surgeon who chooses to shelter and operate on a young American prisoner of war washed ashore near their home. From that decision onward, Hana lives under constant strain: she must manage hostile servants, keep the secret from neighbours, and endure the fear of the military police discovering that they are harbouring the enemy.
When Sadao finally arranges for the American to slip away by boat to a nearby island, Hana watches the danger recede. Her relief is not chiefly for the soldier's freedom; it is relief that the threat hanging over her own household has passed. The secret that could have destroyed Sadao's career and endangered her children is finally gone. …

Hana was drained and weakened by the constant fear that gripped her throughout the ordeal of sheltering the wounded American soldier.
The story places Hana in an impossible situation. She and her husband Sadao have taken in an enemy—a wounded American prisoner of war—at a time when Japan is at war with the United States. The decision to help him is not just morally complex; it is dangerous. Discovery would mean arrest, perhaps execution, certainly disgrace. Hana is not a trained nurse, yet she must tend to a man her country has taught her to see as the enemy, all while knowing that servants have fled in terror and that any moment could bring the police to their door. …
- CBSE 2025Set 1/4/11 markMCQQ.Choose the correct option: What trait of the speaker is reflected in the first line of the extract? (A) optimistic (B) pessimistic (C) realistic (D) fatalistic (Going Places)
›Reveal solutionSolution
The first line of the extract from Going Places reveals the speaker’s realistic acceptance of life’s limitations, not blind optimism, despair, or a belief in fate. The correct option is (C) realistic.
The Concept: Understanding Traits Through Language
In literature, a character’s trait is revealed by their attitude toward circumstances. The four options here represent distinct worldviews:
- Optimistic: Expects the best outcome, even against odds.
- Pessimistic: Expects the worst; focuses on negatives.
- Realistic: Accepts things as they are, without exaggeration or denial.
- Fatalistic: Believes events are predetermined and unavoidable.
The key is to read the first line in context — not just the words, but the tone and the situation.
Step-by-Step Reasoning
-
Locate the extract
The question refers to the story Going Places by A.R. Barton. The first line of the extract (usually from the opening of the story) is:
“When I leave the school, I plan to work in my father’s shop.”
This line is spoken by the protagonist, Sophie, a teenage girl from a modest family.
-
Analyze the speaker’s situation
Sophie dreams of becoming a fashion designer or an actress, but her family expects her to follow a practical path. Her father runs a small shop, and the family’s financial reality is limited. The line shows her acknowledging this reality — she says she plans to work in the shop, not that she wants to.
-
Evaluate each option against the line
- (A) Optimistic: The line does not express hope for a better future; it states a mundane plan. Sophie’s optimism appears later in the story (e.g., her fantasies about meeting Danny Casey), but not here.
- (B) Pessimistic: There is no despair or negativity. She simply states a fact.
- (C) Realistic: She accepts the likely outcome — working in her father’s shop — without complaint or fantasy. This matches the tone of the line. …
- CBSE 2025Set 1/4/11 markMCQQ.The given statement depicts Jansie as a: (A) happy-go-lucky girl. (B) practical friend of Sophie. (C) casual friend of Sophie. (D) jealous friend. (Going Places)
›Reveal solutionSolution
Jansie is portrayed as a grounded and realistic character who consistently tries to bring Sophie back to reality, making her a practical friend.
The question asks us to identify Jansie's character trait based on her depiction in the story "Going Places." To answer this, we need to recall Jansie's interactions and dialogue, particularly in contrast to Sophie's dreamy nature. Character analysis in literature involves understanding a character's personality, motivations, and relationships through their actions, words, and thoughts.
In "Going Places," Sophie is a dreamer, often lost in fantasies of a glamorous future, while Jansie is her classmate and friend who represents a stark contrast: realism and practicality. Jansie's role is often to ground Sophie, reminding her of their actual circumstances and the limitations imposed by their social and economic background.
Here's a step-by-step analysis of Jansie's character:
-
Jansie's Realistic Outlook: From the very beginning, Jansie is shown to be aware of their reality. When Sophie talks about opening a boutique, Jansie immediately reminds her, "Sophie, you're earmarked for the biscuit factory." This statement isn't meant to be cruel but rather a blunt reminder of their likely future, contrasting sharply with Sophie's elaborate dreams.
-
Caution and Concern: Jansie consistently expresses concern for Sophie's well-being, especially when Sophie delves into her fantasies. She warns Sophie about the dangers of daydreaming too much and the potential for disappointment. For instance, she cautions Sophie about spreading stories about meeting Danny Casey, knowing it could lead to trouble or ridicule.
-
Lack of Jealousy or Superficiality: There is no indication in the story that Jansie is jealous of Sophie's dreams or aspirations. Her interventions are driven by a genuine desire for Sophie to face reality and avoid heartbreak, not by envy. Their friendship, while sometimes strained by Sophie's fantasies, is not casual; Jansie cares enough to try and guide Sophie.
-
Evaluating the Options:
- (A) happy-go-lucky girl: Jansie is far from happy-go-lucky. She is acutely aware of their limited prospects and often expresses this with a sense of resignation, not carefree optimism. …

- CBSE 2024Set 1/1/11 markMCQQ.Derry was stammering because of: (A) a speech defect. (B) excitement. (C) anger. (D) fear. (On The Face Of It)
›Reveal solutionSolution
The question is from Susan Hill’s play On the Face of It. Derry’s stammer is not a physical speech defect — it is a psychological response to his disfigured face and the cruel reactions of others. The correct answer is (D) fear.
The key to this question lies in understanding Derry’s character. He is a boy whose face has been severely burned by acid, leaving him with a scarred, disfigured appearance. The play shows that his stammer is not a permanent, organic problem with his speech organs. Instead, it appears when he is anxious, self-conscious, or afraid of how people will react to him.
Think about it: Derry speaks perfectly normally when he is comfortable, such as when he talks to Mr. Lamb. The moment he feels judged or anticipates rejection, his speech falters. This tells us the stammer is a symptom of his deep emotional pain, not a mechanical defect.
Let’s break down the options:
-
Option (A): a speech defect. This would mean a physical or neurological problem with speaking — like a cleft palate or a developmental stutter. Derry’s stammer is situational, not constant. He can speak fluently when he forgets his fear. So this is incorrect.
-
Option (B): excitement. Excitement can make anyone stumble over words, but Derry’s stammer is linked to negative emotions — shame, embarrassment, and dread. He is not excited; he is terrified of being stared at or pitied.
-
Option (C): anger. Derry does feel anger at his condition and at the world, but his stammer is not primarily an angry response. When he is angry, he can be quite articulate. The stammer comes from vulnerability, not rage. …

- CBSE 2024Set 1/1/11 markQ.Complete the sentence appropriately: Derry insisted on going back because __________. (On The Face Of It)
›Reveal solutionSolution
Derry insisted on going back to Mr. Lamb because he found in the old man a unique source of understanding, acceptance, and a new, positive perspective on life, which empowered him to break free from his self-pity and his family's overprotective pity. He sought to embrace this newfound hope and connection.
Derry's insistence on returning to Mr. Lamb's garden is a pivotal moment in the play, marking a significant turning point in his character development. To understand why he was so determined, we must first grasp Derry's emotional state before meeting Mr. Lamb and the profound impact of their conversation.
Before his encounter with Mr. Lamb, Derry was a deeply withdrawn and self-conscious teenager. His face, disfigured by acid, had made him an object of pity, fear, or revulsion for others, leading him to internalize these negative perceptions. He believed himself to be ugly, unloved, and unwanted, and consequently, he isolated himself, preferring solitude to the imagined stares and whispers of people. He carried a heavy burden of self-pity and resentment towards the world.
Mr. Lamb, however, offered Derry something entirely new: genuine acceptance and a different way of seeing the world. He didn't pity Derry, nor did he recoil from his appearance. Instead, he engaged Derry in a conversation that challenged his negative assumptions, encouraged him to embrace life, and showed him that true beauty and ugliness lie not in physical appearance but in one's attitude and perspective. Mr. Lamb's philosophy—that life, despite its challenges, is full of possibilities and that one should not be defined by limitations—ignited a spark of hope in Derry.
Here are the specific reasons why Derry insisted on going back:
-
A profound shift in perspective: Mr. Lamb's words about life, beauty, and acceptance resonated deeply with Derry, challenging his long-held beliefs about his own worthlessness. Mr. Lamb taught him that he could choose to see himself as a unique individual rather than a victim, and that the world offered more than just judgment. This was a revelation for Derry, who had only known negativity.
-
Craving for genuine connection: Derry had never encountered someone who treated him as an equal, without pity or fear. Mr. Lamb offered him true friendship and understanding, seeing beyond his disfigurement to the person within. This genuine connection was something Derry desperately craved but had never experienced. …
-
- CBSE 2024Set 1/1/11 markMCQQ.Mr. Lamb was trying to tell Derry that: (A) it was a matter of perception. (B) Derry could stay with him. (C) he spent all his days in the garden. (D) he was fond of company. (On The Face Of It)
›Reveal solutionSolution
Mr. Lamb's central message to Derry is that how one sees the world—and oneself—is a choice, not a fixed reality determined by physical appearance. The answer is (A).
The heart of the play On the Face of It lies in the contrast between two responses to disfigurement. Derry, a young boy with an acid-burned face, has internalized society's rejection and sees himself through the lens of pity and disgust. Mr. Lamb, an old man with tin legs, has chosen a different path: he refuses to let his disability define his engagement with the world.
When Mr. Lamb speaks to Derry, he is not offering practical arrangements (a place to stay) or making small talk about his hobbies (gardening) or expressing a general preference (liking company). He is doing something far more fundamental: challenging the boy's entire framework for understanding his situation.
Mr. Lamb repeatedly steers the conversation toward how Derry interprets what he hears and experiences. When Derry insists that people are repelled by his face, Mr. Lamb counters not by denying the cruelty of others but by questioning whether Derry must accept their view as truth. He points out that beauty and ugliness, acceptance and rejection, are not objective facts stamped on a person—they are perceptions, and perceptions can shift. …
- CBSE 2024Set 1/2/11 markQ.Why does Mr. Lamb feel that Derry has not come to steal? (On the Face Of It)
›Reveal solutionSolution
Mr. Lamb knows Derry has not come to steal because he leaves his gate open for everyone, and he immediately recognises that Derry’s real reason for entering is a desperate need for human connection — not theft. The answer lies in Mr. Lamb’s deep understanding of loneliness and his refusal to judge by appearances.
The key to this question is understanding Mr. Lamb’s character. He is not naive or careless. He is a man who has lived long with his own disability (a tin leg) and has chosen to see the world with open arms rather than suspicion. When Derry climbs over the wall into his garden, Mr. Lamb does not react with anger or accusation. Instead, he asks calmly, “Who’s there?” and then, “What’s your name?” This is not the behaviour of a man who thinks a thief has entered.
Mr. Lamb’s reasoning is simple and profound: a thief would not have come through the gate — he would have sneaked in. But Derry came through the open gate, and Mr. Lamb leaves his gate open precisely so that people can come in. He says, “I leave my gate open. I want people to come in. I don’t want to shut anyone out.” This is the first clue.
But the deeper reason is that Mr. Lamb sees something in Derry that a thief would never show: vulnerability. Derry’s face is half-burned from an acid accident, and he is deeply ashamed and angry. He has come into the garden not to take anything, but to hide from a world that stares at him. Mr. Lamb notices that Derry is not looking around for things to steal — he is looking at the flowers, at the apples, at the world. He is a boy who has been hurt, not a boy who wants to hurt others.
TipA classic exam pitfall is to answer only that “the gate was open.” That is true but shallow. The real answer is that Mr. Lamb understands human nature: a thief would be furtive and silent, but Derry is hesitant, curious, and full of pain. Mr. Lamb reads this instantly.
Let’s break down the evidence from the text step by step.
-
Mr. Lamb’s philosophy of openness. He tells Derry, “I like people. I like them all. I don’t mind if they come and go. I leave my gate open.” This is not just a habit — it is a deliberate choice. He has chosen to trust the world despite his own suffering. So when Derry enters, Mr. Lamb’s first assumption is not “thief” but “visitor.”
-
Derry’s behaviour gives him away. Derry does not act like a thief. He does not look around nervously or try to hide. Instead, he is drawn to the garden’s beauty — the flowers, the apples, the bees. Mr. Lamb notices this. He says, “You’re not here to steal my apples, are you?” but the tone is playful, not accusing. Derry’s reaction — “No, I’m not” — is immediate and honest. A thief would have lied or run. …
