Character Analysis
When you finish a good story, you often remember a person more than the plot — the way they spoke, what they feared, the choice they made when it mattered most. Character analysis is the skill of studying that person closely: working out who they are, what drives them, and how the writer makes us understand them.
What "character" means in literature
A character is any person (or person-like figure) in a story, play, or poem. They do not all carry the same weight:
- Protagonist — the central figure whose journey the story follows (for example, Derry in On the Face of It).
- Antagonist — the person or force that opposes the protagonist. This need not be a villain; it can be a fear, a society, or a circumstance.
- Foil — a character placed beside another to sharpen the contrast between them. Mr Lamb, calm and open, is a foil to the bitter, withdrawn Derry; the difference makes each one clearer.
- Round vs flat — a round character is complex and many-sided; a flat character has just one or two fixed traits.
- Static vs dynamic — a static character stays essentially the same, while a dynamic character changes over the course of the work.
