The lively, joyful children symbolise youth and life, deliberately contrasted with the mother's old age.

Having 'put that thought away', the poet looks out and sees not only the sprinting trees but also 'the merry children spilling out of their homes'. The children are 'merry', bursting out of their homes in large, happy numbers — the word 'spilling' suggests abundance, movement and overflowing energy.

This image is again a study in contrast. The children are full of life, activity and cheerfulness, symbols of youth and the beginning of life. Beside the poet sits her mother, silent, pale and old, near the end of her life. By setting the joyful, energetic children against her ageing mother, the poet sharpens our sense of the difference between youth and age, and of how life moves inevitably from one to the other.
