Eco's innovation was to write his doctoral dissertation as the story of his research — including his false starts and the way he reached his conclusions — rather than in the usual impersonal, finished-product style of academic writing.

In The Interview (Flamingo), Umberto Eco describes how, from the very beginning of his scholarly life, he wrote differently from other academics. Ordinarily a doctoral dissertation presents only the final, tidy conclusions, hiding the messy path the researcher actually took. Eco did the opposite.

  1. He told the story of his enquiry. Instead of concealing his hesitations and mistakes, Eco narrated how his research had actually unfolded — the questions he asked, the wrong turns he took, and the steps by which he finally arrived at his conclusions. His dissertation therefore read less like a stiff academic report and more like an account of a journey of discovery.

  2. He made scholarship personal and readable. By showing the human process of thinking behind the ideas, he turned a normally forbidding form into something engaging, so that a reader could follow not just what he concluded but how and why. …
