Mukesh is the ray of hope for Firozabad's bangle-makers because he refuses to accept the fate handed down to him and dares to dream of a different livelihood — becoming a motor mechanic — instead of following the family's bangle trade.

Anees Jung's Lost Spring shows the bangle-makers of Firozabad locked in a hopeless cycle. Generations have made bangles in dark, hot workshops, ruining their eyesight, while a web of middlemen, moneylenders, policemen and politicians keeps them poor and powerless.
