Q.What does the phrase 'an exotic moment' in the extract signify? (A) surreal pause from mechanized human activity enabling reflection and unity. (B) ceremonial halt wherein humans acknowledge traditional and ecological wisdom. (C) spontaneous event where all human labour becomes obsolete. (D) rare disruption of routine that highlights cultural diversity and isolation. (Keeping Quiet)

   ›Reveal solutionSolution

In Keeping Quiet, 'an exotic moment' is the rare, almost dreamlike pause from our constant, mechanical activity — a shared stillness that lets us reflect and feel our common humanity. The correct option is (A).

Neruda imagines everyone on earth stopping together for a brief moment — no rushing, no engines, no speech. He calls this 'an exotic moment' because such stillness has become strange and unfamiliar in a world addicted to speed and noise. 'Exotic' here does not mean foreign or tropical; it means unusual, out of the ordinary.

The value of the pause is that it interrupts the thoughtless, often harmful activity that keeps us apart, and lets us reflect and recognise how connected we all are. That is exactly what option (A) captures: a surreal pause from mechanised human activity that enables reflection and unity.

Q.Complete the following sentence suitably: The words 'we' and 'together' in the extract signify _________. (Keeping Quiet)

   ›Reveal solutionSolution

The words 'we' and 'together' in "Keeping Quiet" signify the entire human race, emphasizing a universal call for collective introspection and shared experience of silence to foster unity and understanding.

Pablo Neruda's poem "Keeping Quiet" is a profound appeal for introspection and a temporary cessation of all human activities. To truly grasp the significance of 'we' and 'together', we must first understand the poet's overarching message: a desire for humanity to pause, reflect, and find a path towards peace and mutual understanding. The poet is not addressing a specific nation, community, or individual; his message is global, intended for every single person on Earth.

The word 'we' in the poem refers to all human beings, collectively. It encompasses every individual, transcending artificial boundaries of nationality, race, religion, language, or social status. When the poet says, "Now we will count to twelve and we will all keep still," he is inviting everyone, without exception, to participate in this moment of silence. This universal address underscores the idea that the problems stemming from human actions – conflict, environmental destruction, self-harm – are shared human problems, and their solutions must also be sought collectively.

   Note

The poet's choice of 'we' is deliberate. It avoids any form of exclusion, making the call for quietude and introspection a truly democratic and all-encompassing one. It highlights our shared humanity above all our differences. …

Q.Select the option from those given in brackets to fill in the blank: The excerpt tells us that the poet _________ (condemns/glorifies) the moment of stillness free of rush and engines. (Keeping Quiet)

   ›Reveal solutionSolution

The poet glorifies the moment of stillness, presenting it as a transformative, life-affirming pause that allows humanity to step back from destructive haste and reconnect with itself and the earth.

Pablo Neruda's Keeping Quiet is not a poem of condemnation but of celebration—a quiet, urgent invitation to embrace stillness as an act of collective healing. The poet does not scold us for our noise and speed; instead, he paints the alternative—a world momentarily free of engines, wars, and relentless activity—as something beautiful, necessary, and profoundly human.

From the very opening, Neruda's tone is gentle, almost meditative. He asks us to count to twelve and keep still, not as a punishment but as a gift we give ourselves. The stillness he imagines is not empty or lifeless; it is charged with possibility. When he writes of a moment without "rush" and "engines," he is not merely pointing out what we lack—he is showing us what we gain. In that silence, fishermen would not harm whales, salt-gatherers would not damage their hands, and those who prepare for war would walk about "clean" in their brother's shadow. These images are tender, hopeful, almost utopian. They do not condemn the world as it is so much as they glorify the world as it could be, if only we paused.

The poet's language throughout is one of affirmation. He speaks of "a huge silence" that would interrupt our sadness, of the earth teaching us renewal the way "everything seems dead / and later proves to be alive." This is not the voice of a scold but of a visionary who sees in stillness the seed of transformation. Neruda does not want us to stop forever—he is careful to clarify that he is not advocating "total inactivity" or death. What he glorifies is the quality of the pause: a moment to reflect, to feel our shared humanity, to step out of the machinery of destruction and into a space where life can breathe. …

Q.Choose the correct option that BEST reflects the tone of the poet in the given extract: (A) despairing and cynical (B) aggressive and accusatory (C) meditative and hopeful (D) humorous and sarcastic (Keeping Quiet)

   ›Reveal solutionSolution

The poet’s tone in Keeping Quiet is best described as meditative and hopeful — he urges introspection, not blame, and believes silence can lead to renewal.

The extract from Pablo Neruda’s poem Keeping Quiet is not a rant or a bitter complaint. It is a quiet, almost prayerful invitation. The poet asks us to stop, to be still, to count to twelve, and to step back from the frantic rush of modern life. There is no anger in his voice, no finger-pointing. Instead, he speaks with the calm authority of someone who has seen the damage caused by constant activity and wants to offer a different path.

Look at the language he uses: “let’s not speak in any language,” “let’s stop for one second,” “a sudden strangeness.” These are gentle, coaxing phrases. He does not accuse anyone of wrongdoing; he simply observes that “wars with gas, wars with fire” happen because of a “victory with no survivors.” The tone is reflective — he is thinking aloud about human failure, not condemning it. There is a deep sadness in his words, but it is a sadness that carries hope. He believes that a moment of collective silence can “understand ourselves” and perhaps even “threaten ourselves with death” — meaning, we might finally grasp the fragility of life.

   Note

The poem was written in the shadow of the Cold War and nuclear threats, but Neruda deliberately avoids a political rant. His tone remains universal and philosophical, not tied to any one nation or ideology. …

Q.Complete the sentence: The phrase 'hurt hands' is a symbol of _________. (Keeping Quiet)

   ›Reveal solutionSolution

The phrase 'hurt hands' symbolizes the physical pain, suffering, and self-inflicted wounds resulting from relentless, often exploitative, human labour and unthinking actions.

Pablo Neruda's poem 'Keeping Quiet' is a powerful appeal for introspection, mutual understanding, and a cessation of destructive activities. The poet urges humanity to pause, be still for a moment, and reflect on its actions and their consequences. Within this broader call for quiet contemplation, the phrase 'hurt hands' emerges as a poignant symbol, illustrating the direct impact of human activity on individuals.

The phrase appears in the line, "the man gathering salt would look at his hurt hands." This image is not merely a literal description but carries significant symbolic weight, representing several layers of meaning:

   • Physical Toil and Suffering: On a literal level, 'hurt hands' refers to the physical pain and injury sustained by labourers engaged in arduous work, such as gathering salt. This work is often repetitive, demanding, and performed under harsh conditions, leading to calluses, cuts, and general wear and tear. It highlights the physical cost borne by those who engage in relentless manual labour for survival or economic gain.

   • Self-Inflicted Wounds: The 'hurt' in the hands is a direct consequence of the man's own actions. While often driven by necessity, this imagery underscores how humans, in their continuous pursuit of material wealth, resources, or even basic survival, often inflict harm upon themselves. It suggests a cycle where the very actions taken to sustain life or achieve goals end up causing pain and damage to the individual.

   • Consequences of Unthinking Action: The poem's central theme is the need for a pause, a moment of stillness to reflect. The 'hurt hands' serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of continuous, unexamined activity. If the man were to pause, he might truly look at his hurt hands, acknowledging the pain and perhaps questioning the relentless nature of his work. This introspection could lead to a realization of the need for rest, change, or a different approach to life. …

Q.What message is the poet conveying through the given extract? (Keeping Quiet)

   ›Reveal solutionSolution

Neruda urges humanity to pause, embrace stillness, and reflect—so that we may escape the cycle of violence, environmental destruction, and alienation born of our relentless, thoughtless activity.

Pablo Neruda's "Keeping Quiet" is a meditation on the transformative power of silence and stillness. The poem does not ask us to stop living or working; rather, it invites us to interrupt the frenzy of modern existence for a single, shared moment of introspection. In that moment—counted to twelve, a symbolic number evoking the hours of a clock or the months of a year—we would stop speaking, stop moving, and simply be.

The poet's central message is that our ceaseless activity, our rush to produce and consume and conquer, has severed us from ourselves, from each other, and from the earth. Neruda points to the violence embedded in our daily lives: wars waged with gas and fire, the destruction of whales in the sea, the exploitation of the land by salt-gatherers whose hands are hurt in the process. These are not random examples. They represent the harm we inflict when we act without reflection—harm to nature, harm to others, harm even to ourselves.

   Important

Neruda is not advocating passivity or death. He explicitly rejects confusion with "total inactivity" or with death. The stillness he seeks is alive—a pause that allows us to see clearly, to feel our shared humanity, to recognize the cost of our actions.

What would happen in that moment of quiet? Neruda imagines a world suddenly strange and unfamiliar: no engines, no voices, a "sudden strangeness" in which we might actually notice one another. Fishermen would not harm whales, men gathering salt would stop and look at their injured hands, those preparing wars—whether with gas or fire or victory—would put on clean clothes and walk with their brothers in the shade, doing nothing. The image is radical: even those who orchestrate violence would, in the stillness, remember their kinship with others. …

Q.The expression 'we will all keep still' reflects : (A) the poet's willingness to keep quiet. (B) the significance of stillness. (C) the poet's appeal for collective engagement. (D) the purpose of counting up to twelve. (Keeping Quiet)

   ›Reveal solutionSolution

'We will all keep still' is the poet's appeal for collective engagement (C) — an invitation to everyone to pause together, not a mere statement of personal willingness or an abstract point about silence.

In 'Keeping Quiet', Pablo Neruda imagines a single extraordinary moment when the whole of humanity stops at once — counts to twelve, falls silent, and keeps still. The word 'all' in 'we will all keep still' is the key to the line. It turns stillness from a private, individual choice into a shared, almost ceremonial act performed by everyone together.

This matters because the poem's vision depends on collectiveness. Neruda pictures fishermen sparing the whales, salt-gatherers pausing to notice their hurt hands, and those preparing wars standing quietly among their brothers. Such a transformation only makes sense if people act as one. The line is therefore an appeal — a gentle call inviting all of humanity to engage in the same conscious pause. …

Q.What does the poet want us to stop ? (Keeping Quiet)

   ›Reveal solutionSolution

The poet, Pablo Neruda, in "Keeping Quiet," urges humanity to pause from all forms of destructive activity, incessant rush, and superficial communication to facilitate introspection, mutual understanding, and a more peaceful coexistence.

Pablo Neruda's poem "Keeping Quiet" is a profound call for introspection and a temporary cessation of the world's relentless activity. The poet does not advocate for total inactivity, which he clarifies is akin to death, but rather for a moment of conscious stillness. He wants us to stop a range of actions and attitudes that prevent us from understanding ourselves, each other, and the true value of life.

Primarily, the poet wants us to stop the incessant rush and noise that characterize modern existence. He asks us to count to twelve and keep still, implying a halt to the frantic pace at which we live, constantly pursuing goals without pausing to reflect. This includes stopping the constant chatter and communication, even "not speak in any language," to move beyond superficial interactions and allow for a deeper, non-verbal connection or internal reflection.

More specifically, Neruda identifies several destructive human activities that he wishes us to cease:

   • Harmful exploitation of nature: He envisions a world where "fishermen in the cold sea would not harm whales." This is a direct plea to stop the environmental degradation and the ruthless exploitation of natural resources and wildlife, which often occurs without thought for long-term consequences.
   • Self-inflicted harm and relentless toil: The poet mentions "the man gathering salt would look at his hurt hands." This powerful image symbolizes the self-destructive nature of human labor driven by greed or necessity, where individuals inflict pain upon themselves without pausing to acknowledge the cost. It's a call to stop the relentless pursuit of material gain that often comes at the expense of one's own well-being.
   • All forms of warfare and conflict: Neruda explicitly calls for an end to "green wars, wars with gas, wars with fire, victory with no survivors." This encompasses not only conventional warfare but also "green wars," which can be interpreted as wars against nature or conflicts arising from environmental destruction. He highlights the futility of such conflicts, where even a "victory" leaves no one to celebrate, urging us to stop the cycle of aggression and violence. …

Q.Read the assertion and the reason below, with reference to the given extract. Assertion: The poet advocates the importance of keeping quiet. Reason: He believes that silence can bring out profound changes in our perspective and lifestyle. Choose the correct option: (A) Both the assertion and the reason are true, but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion. (B) Both the assertion and the reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion. (C) The assertion is true, but the reason is false. (D) The assertion is false, but the reason is true. (Keeping Quiet)

   ›Reveal solutionSolution

Both the assertion and the reason are true, and the reason directly explains why the poet advocates keeping quiet — silence, in his vision, transforms how we see ourselves and live.

Pablo Neruda's "Keeping Quiet" is built on a simple yet radical proposition: that a moment of collective stillness can interrupt the frenzy of modern life and allow us to see clearly. The poet does not ask for permanent withdrawal or inaction. He asks for a pause, a deliberate cessation of our usual noise and busyness, so that something deeper can surface.

The assertion captures the poem's central plea. Neruda repeatedly urges us to "keep still," to "count to twelve," to stop our engines and our wars and our relentless doing. This is not a casual suggestion. The entire poem is structured as an invitation — almost a manifesto — for quietness. He imagines a world where, for once, we do not speak in any language, where we stop our hands and our machines, where fishermen do not harm whales and men gathering salt do not injure their own hands. The advocacy is unmistakable.

The reason goes to the heart of why he makes this plea. Neruda believes that in the absence of noise and motion, we can experience what he calls "a sudden strangeness" — a moment of clarity in which we are no longer rushing, no longer divided by our purposes, no longer "threatening ourselves with death." He writes that this stillness would allow us to understand ourselves and our lives differently, to feel a kinship with all living things, to recognize that our frantic activity often leads to sadness and self-destruction. The silence he proposes is not empty; it is full of insight. It is the condition for a shift in perspective, a chance to step outside the logic of war, greed, and harm. …

Q.Complete the following statement correctly: The poet urges the people to count to twelve so that _________. (Keeping Quiet)

    ›Reveal solutionSolution

The poet urges the people to count to twelve so that they can pause their frantic activity, achieve a moment of stillness, and reflect on the destructive consequences of their actions.

In Pablo Neruda’s poem Keeping Quiet, the instruction to “count to twelve” is not a literal arithmetic exercise. It is a poetic device — a symbolic call for a brief, voluntary suspension of all movement and noise. The number twelve itself carries weight: it echoes the twelve hours of a clock, the twelve months of a year, or the twelve signs of the zodiac. By asking us to count to twelve, Neruda is asking us to step out of the relentless rush of time and into a shared, deliberate pause.

The deeper purpose of this pause is introspection. Neruda believes that human beings have become trapped in a cycle of endless activity — working, fighting, competing, and hurting one another and the planet. This constant motion leaves no room for thought or empathy. The poet wants us to stop, even for a few seconds, so that we can “understand ourselves” and recognise the harm we cause. The counting is a tool to break the momentum of our lives, creating a space where silence can speak.

    Note

The poem was written in the context of the Cold War, when the world was divided by ideological conflict and the threat of nuclear war. Neruda’s call for stillness was also a plea for peace — a moment to step back from the brink of destruction. …

Q.'Counting to twelve' is suggested as a _____________ (synchronized/disorganized) effort for everybody to keep quiet. (Keeping Quiet)

    ›Reveal solutionSolution

'Counting to twelve' in "Keeping Quiet" represents a synchronized, collective pause for universal introspection and peace, initiated by the poet's call for everyone to participate simultaneously.

Pablo Neruda's poem "Keeping Quiet" is a profound call for introspection and a temporary cessation of all human activities. The poet urges humanity to take a moment, a brief interval, to pause and reflect on their actions, their lives, and their impact on the world. This pause is not meant to be an escape from life, but rather a moment of conscious awareness, a chance to understand ourselves and our fellow beings better.

The phrase "counting to twelve" is central to this idea. It is a symbolic gesture, not a literal instruction to count aloud. The number twelve could represent the twelve hours on a clock, signifying a brief, manageable period, or perhaps the twelve months of a year, suggesting a cycle of reflection. Regardless of the specific interpretation of the number, its essence lies in marking a universal, simultaneous moment.

    Note

The poet's intention is not for people to literally count to twelve out loud, but for everyone to collectively agree to a moment of stillness and silence at the same time.

This collective stillness is precisely why "counting to twelve" is suggested as a synchronized effort. The poet envisions a world where, for a single, unified moment, all human activity ceases. This includes the noise of engines, the rush of work, the clamour of arguments, and even the movement of limbs. For this vision to be realized, the effort must be coordinated and universal. If it were disorganized, with individuals pausing at different times or not at all, the profound impact of a shared, global moment of silence and introspection would be lost.

    Important

The power of the poet's message lies in the idea of a collective experience. A synchronized effort ensures that this moment of quiet is shared by all, fostering a sense of universal brotherhood and mutual understanding. …

Q.How can the message in the excerpt, about silence and stillness be applied to promote peace in today's world ? (Keeping Quiet)

    ›Reveal solutionSolution

Neruda's call for collective silence and stillness offers a pathway to peace by interrupting the cycles of violence, environmental destruction, and alienation that stem from our relentless, unreflective activity.

The poem "Keeping Quiet" rests on a deceptively simple proposition: what if, for just twelve seconds, we all stopped? Counted to twelve, kept our arms still, spoke no language. Pablo Neruda was writing in the shadow of the Cold War, nuclear brinkmanship, and accelerating industrialization—a world not unlike our own, where the machinery of conflict and consumption never pauses. His insight was that our ceaseless doing, our refusal to stop and reflect, feeds the very violence and destruction we claim to oppose.

Neruda identifies three interlocking crises that silence might address. First, the violence of war and aggression. He imagines "wars with gas, wars with fire" ceasing, the man preparing "green wars, wars with gas, wars with fire" suddenly standing still, realizing the futility of "victories with no survivors." In today's context—marked by regional conflicts, terrorism, cyber warfare, and the ever-present threat of nuclear escalation—this stillness becomes a radical act. It creates a gap, a breath, between provocation and retaliation. Modern conflict resolution increasingly recognizes the need for "cooling-off periods," for pauses that allow empathy and dialogue to emerge. Neruda's twelve seconds is a metaphor for that essential interruption.

Second, the violence we inflict on the Earth. The fisherman who "would not harm whales," the man gathering salt who "would look at his hurt hands"—these images speak to our exploitation of nature and ourselves. Today's climate emergency, mass extinction, and resource depletion are the fruits of unexamined activity, of economies that equate growth with speed and extraction. Stillness invites us to see the consequences of our actions, to notice the "hurt hands," the poisoned rivers, the warming atmosphere. Environmental movements increasingly emphasize mindfulness, the practice of paying attention, as a prerequisite for sustainable living.

Third, the violence of alienation—from ourselves, from each other, from life itself. Neruda warns against confusing stillness with death; he wants "life" but without the "rush" that keeps us "threatening ourselves with death." Modern life, with its digital acceleration, its cult of productivity, its epidemic of burnout and loneliness, embodies this threat. We are so busy performing our lives that we forget to live them. The silence Neruda proposes is not emptiness but presence—a chance to "feel a sudden strangeness," to recognize our common humanity beneath the noise of ideology and identity.

    Note

Neruda explicitly distinguishes his stillness from "total inactivity" or death. He invokes the Earth itself, which "seems dead" in winter yet "later proves to be alive," as a model. Stillness is not passivity but a necessary pause before wiser, more deliberate action.

How might this apply practically? Consider these dimensions:

    • In conflict zones and diplomacy: Building in mandatory reflection periods before military or political escalation, creating spaces for adversaries to see each other as human rather than abstract enemies.
    • In environmental policy: Instituting "pause protocols" before major industrial or development projects, requiring genuine assessment rather than rubber-stamping; promoting Sabbath economics, the idea that rest and regeneration are not luxuries but necessities.
    • In education and media: Teaching contemplative practices alongside critical thinking, creating curricula that value depth over coverage; resisting the attention economy that profits from our distraction and outrage. …
