In Jack Finney's 'The Third Level', Charley stumbles into a hidden level of Grand Central Station where everything belongs to the 1890s — the flickering gas lights, the old locomotives, the men in derby hats and old-fashioned clothes. This is what tips him from doubt towards belief. A vivid dream can be argued away, but a newspaper that genuinely existed on a genuine date is stubborn evidence — it tells him that the world he walked into was not invented by his imagination but was a real slice of 1894.
