The childhood incident at the California beach gave Douglas his very first fear of water — a lasting aversion that lay in his mind long before the later, far worse experience at the swimming pool.

Douglas's fear of water did not begin at the Y.M.C.A. pool; its seed was planted much earlier, when he was only three or four years old. His father took him to the beach in California, and while they were in the surf a powerful wave knocked the small boy down and swept over him, burying him under the water. His father, who understood how harmless the waves really were, stood by and laughed, but for the child those few seconds were terrifying — he was buried in water, his breath was gone, and he was overwhelmed by fear.

The episode left a deep impression on him. Although he was very young, the memory of being helpless under the water lingered, giving him an early dread of the sea and of being submerged. This latent fear stayed with him quietly for years. …
