Sadao's escape plan is arguably the best choice available, balancing conscience, safety and humanity in a situation with no easy answer.

Sadao faced a genuine dilemma with no clean solution. Handing Tom to the police would send the healed man to certain death and betray Sadao's own conscience; letting the General's assassins kill him would make Sadao complicit in murder in his own home; keeping him indefinitely would eventually be discovered and ruin the whole family.

His final solution neatly avoids all three evils. He gives Tom his own stout boat, food, bottled water, quilts, Japanese clothes and a flashlight, and directs him to the uninhabited island near the coast where a Korean fishing boat might carry him to freedom. This preserves the soldier's life — the very life Sadao's skill had saved — without staining Sadao's hands or exposing his family.
