Sadao's dilemma between patriotism and conscience shows how private humanity and national loyalty can pull a person in opposite directions.

When the wounded American sailor is washed up at his door, Sadao is instantly caught between two loyalties. As a citizen of a Japan at war, national duty is clear: the man is 'a prisoner of war' and an escaped enemy, and both Sadao and Hana know that hiding him could see them 'arrested' and their children endangered. Sadao even admits, 'He is my enemy. All Americans are my enemy.' Yet as a doctor he has been 'trained not to let a man die if I can help it', and his hands 'seemed of their own will' to staunch the bleeding. His American teacher's words — that to operate with anything less than full care 'is murder' — govern his conscience.

The servants, who put country first, leave in protest; the General offers to have the man quietly assassinated. But Sadao cannot bring himself to let it happen. In the end he chooses his private conscience, giving Tom his own boat, food and flashlight so he can escape. His final thought — 'I wonder why I could not kill him?' — shows that shared humanity finally weighed more than wartime hatred.

✓Final answer

Sadao is pulled between the citizen's duty to surrender an enemy and the individual's duty to save a life. Though patriotism and fear press him to hand Tom over, his conscience as a doctor and a human being wins: he treats the soldier and helps him escape, showing that in such moments private humanity can quietly triumph over national loyalty.
