The mistake was exposed the next morning. Once the peddler stood bathed, shaved, his hair cut, and dressed in a good suit belonging to the ironmaster, it was impossible in broad daylight to take him for the old regimental comrade the ironmaster had greeted in the uncertain glow of the forge. The ironmaster was taken aback and offended. "What does this mean?" he thundered. The stranger made no attempt to hide the truth: he said it was not his fault, that he had never pretended to be anything but a poor trader and had only pleaded to be allowed to sleep in the forge, and offered simply to put on his rags again and leave. Hesitating, the ironmaster answered that it "was not quite honest, either," and warned that he "should not be surprised if the sheriff would like to have something to say in the matter." Only after the peddler struck the table and delivered his clever speech — that the whole world is a rattrap, and that the ironmaster too might one day be caught reaching for a big piece of pork — did the ironmaster begin to laugh, agree to "let the sheriff alone on Christmas Eve," and tell him to "get out of here as fast as you can." …
