Sam is Charley’s friend and, it turns out, his psychiatrist; the closing twist — his 1894 letter from Galesburg — reverses everything, for the very man who explained the third level away has himself escaped into it.

For most of the story Sam Weiner seems a minor figure — Charley’s friend, a “city boy” who enjoyed hearing about Galesburg. He also embodies the rational, sceptical view: as Charley’s psychiatrist he had diagnosed the third level as a “waking-dream wish fulfillment” caused by the insecurity of modern life, and had worried when Charley bought old-style currency. Then Sam suddenly disappears. The twist arrives when Charley finds, among his oldest first-day covers, a letter postmarked July 18, 1894 from 941 Willard Street, Galesburg. It is from Sam, saying he came to believe Charley, found the third level, and urging Charley and Louisa to keep looking.
